 The Role of W.I.S.E.

Westwood Involvement Supports Education (W.I.S.E.) is the non-profit parent support and volunteer organization at Westwood Charter Elementary School. W.I.S.E. raises funds to support and maintain educational programs, resources, and enrichment at Westwood Charter. The organization also supports and assists programs and activities that enhance the school community and serves as a forum for parents to gather and exchange ideas. Anyone who is interested may participate in W.I.S.E. There are many ways to get involved and put your many talents to use.

Mission Statement

The specific purpose of Westwood Involvement Supports Education (W.I.S.E.) is to provide support and assistance to the Westwood Charter Elementary School, including, but not limited to, support for academics, art, music, drama, philanthropic endeavors, and other programs, services, or acquisitions deemed to be in the best interests of the students, staff or school.

Organizational Structure

On September 15, 2008, W.I.S.E. adopted the set of restated by-laws by which it operates. The business and affairs of the organization are managed by a nine-member Board of Directors. Each board member holds one of the following officer positions:

President
The President is the facilitative leader, general manager, and chief executive officer of W.I.S.E. The president is responsible for guiding the organization toward its vision and broad goals, and providing general supervision, direction, and control of the business and officers of the organization.

Vice President for Fundraising
The Vice President for Fundraising supervises, directs, and oversees all fundraising activities of the organization.

Vice President for Programs/Services
The Vice President for Programs/Services supervises, directs, and oversees the non-fundraising activities of the organization including, but not limited to, parent educational events and social programs, honorary programs, and parent service activities.

Secretary
The Secretary keeps the minutes of all W.I.S.E. meetings, is responsible for providing communications about meetings, and serves as the liaison with the school newsletter.

Treasurer/Bookkeeper
The Treasurer/Bookkeeper is responsible for all record-keeping and bookkeeping for the organization.

Treasurer/Check-Writing
The Treasurer/Check-Writing is responsible for accounts payable.

Parent Orientation Coordinator
The Parent Orientation Coordinator is responsible for facilitating communications and contacts among parents, orienting new parents, overseeing development and publication of the annual school directory, coordinating volunteer sign-ups, and distributing beginning-of-the-year information packets for parents.

Community Outreach Liaison
The Community Outreach Liaison oversees activities and opportunities that link programs at Westwood Charter Elementary School to the broader community.

Room Rep Coordinator
The Room Rep Coordinator oversees all classroom representatives who serve as liaisons between teachers, parents, and the Board.

The W.I.S.E. Board members serve for a term of two years. Qualified candidates for election to the Board are nominated by the W.I.S.E. Nominating Committee (comprised of parent volunteers), and elected by the vote of a majority of the entire Board. During the school year, the W.I.S.E. Board meets monthly.

W.I.S.E. business meetings are held monthly. All parents are invited to attend.

Each W.I.S.E. service, program, and fundraising activity is coordinated by an ad-hoc committee that has one or more parent volunteer chairpersons.
